net zero

A webinar due to take place on Friday 25 June will support businesses looking to reduce their carbon emissions and encourage everyone to get ahead in the race to net zero, as well as reflecting on the issues raised at the G7 Summit.

Building on the aspirations of the G7 Summit (11 – 13 June) – to help the world build back better from the Covid-19 pandemic and to create a greener, more prosperous future – we are hosting a ‘Greener Business’ webinar from 8.30am on 25 June in collaboration with Lombard, the asset finance division of the NatWest Group, which supports businesses across the South West in their investment and strategy development.

Race to net zero webinar

Keynote speaker for the free online event will be Sonya Bedford MBE, who heads-up our Energy team and is an expert in renewable energy. Sonya is nationally renowned for her renewable energy experience, having worked in the sustainability sector for over 10 years as a lawyer, and has gained an MSc in renewable energy. In 2018 she was also awarded an MBE for her services to community energy, following a trio of industry awards.

Sonya says: “I am delighted this critical issue has found its place on the global stage. Our renewable energy team have delivered over 300 solar farms for clients, we acted on the first wind farm in England and the first solar farm and now work with many clients and communities in delivering smart low carbon energy infrastructure.

“Having this innate knowledge of sustainability and zero carbon energy has allowed us to be more knowledgeable in our own business, and we are currently sourcing a truly green supply of electricity and looking at more ways to ensure our business sits lightly on the planet.”

Sonya will be joined by Gavin Poole from our Corporate team, who has been volunteering for The Chancery Lane Project – an ambitious and ground-breaking collaboration of lawyers working pro bono to create the legal conditions to fight climate change, by finding practical legal solutions in the form of model laws and clauses to be wired into legal agreements. Gavin will offer advice on embedding green clauses and sustainability into governance, key contracts and supply chains to ensure full transparency on any environmental claims made to the consumer as we move towards an inclusive green recovery and as we aim for net zero.

Guest speaker at the event will be Steven Lovell, a member of the Business Development team for Lombard, who have had a leading proposition in Green Energy lending since its launch over 10 years ago, working with both SMEs as well as supporting larger renewable projects. The NatWest Group are a principle partner of COP26 in Glasgow later this year, and provided £12Bn of funding in 2020 as part of its Climate and Sustainable Finance Commitment. Lombard is the UK’s largest Asset Finance Provider (AFI AF50 2021 report) and has c£7Bn in funding provided to UK businesses, including its specialist Green Energy Finance offering.
