Retirement and wealth protection

There’s an issue that many business owners eventually have to face. How to step down, sell on or transfer your assets to children and other family members when the time comes to pass on the reins.

There’s a parallel problem, too. Can you be confident you’ll have enough money to enjoy a secure retirement? And what if you need care as you grow older? Let Stephens Scown put your mind at rest.

Look forward to your future

With our in-depth experience, we can assure you that you have plenty of options in all of these matters. Obviously, some of these can seem quite complex, but we can talk you through everything and translate the benefits into plain English. That’s something we’re very well qualified to do:

  • Members of STEP – the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners
  • Members of SFE – Solicitors for the Elderly
  • Members of ATT – Association of Taxation Technicians

What’s more, we have formed close relationships with other specialised professionals that we can recommend, such as accountants and independent financial advisers. Like ourselves, they’ll treat you with courtesy and maintain confidentiality.

Peace of mind

Our wealth protection team has been ranked the best in Devon and Cornwall by the two major independent law guides. We think that gives you the peace of mind you need when choosing who should help you with some of the most important decisions you will ever make. Please contact us so we can tell you more.

Our recent experience includes:

  • advising a farming family on new Wills for the parents and for the next generation who will eventually over the farm. This included restructuring the business to bring the child and spouse into partnership, while ensuring that adequate provision was also made for other children
  • advised a farmer who had several children, but wanted to leave the farm to just one of them. We advised that this child be brought into partnership, and the Will restructured to ensure fair provision was made for the other children.
  • assisted a major shareholder in his business succession planning, including using a trust to maximise inheritance tax relief
