John is a partner in the Commercial Real Estate team in Truro. He joined Stephens Scown in 2021 after spending over two decades based at the City firm of Laytons LLP. John qualified as a solicitor in 1986.
John acts on a wide spectrum of commercial property matters. These range from freehold and leasehold acquisitions and disposals (including development sites), providing advice to landlords and tenants on a wide range of issues including liabilities on exiting leasehold premises, property finance (including acting for mezzanine funders of residential property developments), property support on corporate transactions through to acting for mixed use developer clients on commercial lettings. John also advises off—shore clients on UK residential property portfolio assembly/investment.
Examples of John’s recent work include:
- Advising a client in relation to a dilapidations settlement agreement on exiting a substantial office building in West London and, as part of their relocation programme, advising the client on the acquisition of office space in a newly refurbished building
- Acting for a developer client on the grant of a concurrent investor lease of part of the commercial space in a mixed use development, following the grant of a blocker head lease of the whole of the commercial space in order to circumvent pre-emption rights of residential tenants under the LTA 1987
- Advising in connection with a variation of option arrangements and rent sharing deed relating to a solar park development
- Advising a luxury holiday resort owner/operator on the structuring of sales of villas on long leases with leasebacks to the operator.
John is a member of the Law Society.
Outside of work he enjoys playing golf, attending classical music concerts and playing guitar (jazz/blues).
