Matt joined Stephens Scown in October 2024 and is a partner in the Employment team.

With more than 20 years of experience, he specialises in advising employers on complex workplace issues, disputes, and strategic people decisions.

Among his areas of expertise are:

• Working closely with business owners, HR professionals, and senior leaders to give clear, practical employment advice.
• Operating in the manufacturing and industrial sectors, providing commercial solutions and managing legal risk where matters of health and safety risk, trade union activity, and workforce change play a part.
• Representing clients at Employment Tribunal claims and workplace disputes, ranging from complex discrimination, whistleblowing and unfair dismissal claims to senior exits and business restructures.

Some examples of his work include:

• Conducting a successful defence of a significant race discrimination claim.
• Securing a beneficial exit for a HR Director in challenging and acrimonious circumstances.
• Advising a cutting-edge technology client on a major restructure of its manufacturing business.
• Securing significant settlements in two different sexual harassment claims against the Police.

He has held senior leadership roles and has founded and run his own employment law practice with Carbon Law Partners, giving him first‑hand insight into leadership, growth, risk management and commercial decision‑making.

Matt was President of CILEX (Chartered Institute of Legal Executives) from 2022 to 2023, during a period of significant change for the legal profession. He provided strategic leadership while CILEX undertook a review of regulatory provision and future professional direction, giving him an understanding of governance, accountability, and decision‑making at senior level.

An active commentator on employment law developments, he hosted a podcast focused on workplace and employment issues, and shares clear, practical updates via LinkedIn to help employers stay ahead of legal change.

Outside of work, Matt is a keen cricketer, regular go-karter, and attends music gigs in addition to spending time at the gym and travelling when he can.
