Concept for Stephens Scown celebrates top rankings in independent legal guide

We are celebrating another impressive performance in the latest edition of Chambers UK Legal Guide, which launched on 20 October. Confirming our position as a regional heavyweight, the Firm has no fewer than 29 legal advisors ranked in 15 sections of the prestigious guide, with six solicitors receiving the highest Band 1 ranking.

Our Family Law team – one of the largest in the South West – had another strong year and remains the only team to receive top ranking across both Cornwall and Devon in the Family Law section of the Guide. Joining Sarah Atkinson and Jill Bruce as top-ranked lawyers in the Firm’s Truro office, Andrew Barton and Mark Smith have risen to Band 1 in Devon. In addition, the previously Band 1-ranked Mark Chanter, has been ranked as one of Chambers’ Senior Statespeople. The guide says: “Mark is highly experienced and never misses a beat. He advises clients to enable them to establish a strategy from the off, and provides clear, focused advice in a friendly manner.”

As well as our Corporate team retaining its Band 1 ranking, Corporate (M&A) lawyer, Giles Dunning, receives Band 3 ranking for the first time in recognition of his broad range of experience in corporate and M&A matters, notably in relation to transactions for IFAs. One client comments: “He’s always very helpful and supportive,” while another mentions the wider team saying, “They were always available to help with the challenges… We were so impressed with their willingness to assist and be accurate.”

Commercial Dispute Resolution lawyer, Catherine Mathews, adds to her ranking with a new Band 2 for Professional Negligence (Mainly Claimant, Litigation). Meanwhile, in the Firm’s Planning team, Duncan Tilney also ranks for the first time thanks to his extensive experience across the breadth of Planning Law and procedure, including complex planning permission and Section 106 agreements.

The Firm’s Managing Partner, Richard Baker, who once again retains his standing as an Eminent Practitioner, commented: “It is wonderful to see the hard work of all our teams rewarded with increased rankings in this year’s Chambers Legal Guide. With our focus on delivering an outstanding client experience, it is doubly rewarding to read the many positive client comments about our people going above and beyond to help them through the good times and the tough times.”
