What does the Electronic Communications Code means for landowners?
Successive governments have promoted the fast rollout of fibre broadband and mobile connectivity across the UK. The Electronic Communications Code, which regulates leases and other agreements for the installation and maintenance of telecommunications apparatus on land, has been substantially amended since its introduction in December 2017 and aims to enable telecommunications operators to acquire new sites, renew existing agreements and upgrade equipment.
This is an issue that is prevalent for rural landowners, as well as urban areas, with masts cables and other equipment needed across the country. Remote areas with poor connectivity are likely to be targeted by operators.
Due to the rights afforded to operators by the Code when they are granted an agreement, it is important to fully understand the implications of entering into an agreement.
The team at Stephens Scown is committed to assisting landowners with the renewal and/or grant of Code agreements. With experience in negotiating with the major operators, we ensure that landowners are well-informed and protected.
We support clients with all aspects of Code agreements, from initial negotiations to finalising contracts and including strategic guidance throughout.
