Daisy Smith

In this series, we introduce some of the people that make up Stephens Scown. We learn about their expertise, what drew them to join the legal profession and find out a little bit about who they are outside of work.

Here we introduce Daisy Smith, a paralegal in our Employment team.

Can you share with us a little bit about your role and a typical day?

As a Paralegal in the Employment team, I primarily support senior legal advisers with a variety of matters, which allows me to engage with a host of aspects of employment law. A typical day involves taking attendance notes during client meetings and providing paralegal support, which can include drafting settlement agreements, contracts of employment, and without prejudice correspondence.

I am also part of the HRExpress team, which offers employment and HR advice to employer clients on annual retainers. In this role, I assist with reviewing staff handbooks and contracts, helping employers manage disciplinary and grievance procedures, and navigating flexible working requests and long-term sickness absences.

Additionally, I enjoy working as part of a sub-team that supports the Corporate team with business sales and M&As, addressing any employment issues that arise from these transactions.

Why did you choose to specialise in employment law?

When I joined the firm in September 2024, I had no prior experience in employment law, as I had never studied it while undertaking my law degree at Bristol University. However, since becoming a member of the Employment team, I have thoroughly enjoyed the fast-paced and inherently human nature of this area of law.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

Growing up in the Southwest, I am passionate about promoting the growth and success of local businesses, employers, and individuals. Therefore, supporting clients during challenging periods in their business or personal lives is incredibly fulfilling.

On a personal level, my varied role as a Paralegal allows me to expand my knowledge and deepen my understanding of how the law operates on a practical level.

If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you be and why?

If the legal sector wasn’t for me, I would love to own my own business. I have an entrepreneurial flair, which I have developed by selling my sister’s old clothes on online second-hand clothing platforms and my love for the TV show “The Apprentice.”

How do you spend your time outside of work?

Outside of work, I thoroughly enjoy playing sports, whether it’s hockey, netball, or running. I also love exploring the Southwest and making the most of the beautiful beaches it has to offer. However, in the colder months, I admittedly get outside a lot less and love crocheting indoors!

What does it mean to work for Stephens Scown, what makes us different?

Working at Stephens Scown means being part of a business where our B Corp status is integral to our identity, as it genuinely cares about its people, the local community and the planet. A standout moment of Stephens Scown’s ‘giving back’ initiative for me was when the entire Employment team recently spent a day volunteering at Porfell Wildlife Park and Sanctuary, a family-run, not-for-profit farm that takes in animals that no one else wants. The team came together to revamp the establishment ahead of its summer re-opening. We spent the day painting walls and fences, clearing pathways, and preparing the animal enclosures. This is just one of many examples that remind me how fortunate I am to work for a firm that is aspiring to make a meaningful difference.
