The Child Support Agency had been heavily criticised from its beginning regarding its failure to properly collect maintenance.
A frequent criticism of the Child Support Agency (aside from the delays and cost) was that it would focus on collection of child maintenance in the more straightforward cases but be unable to collect maintenance in the more complicated financial situations.
The Child Support Agency has been replaced by the Child Maintenance and Enforcement Commission (CMEC). Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith has said that he will compel CMEC to collect almost £4 billion in unpaid money. At a recent Commons question time, Mr Duncan Smith told MPs that there
were debts of £3.8 billion outstanding. He said that the policy of CMEC would be to focus on those absent fathers who sought to avoid making payments. This is in line with the Government's policy that parents should take responsibility for their children, whether they live with them or not.
It remains to be seen whether CMEC meet this target or not.
