All EEA nationals are free to enter and live in the UK without the need to apply for permission. Nationals of countries that joined the European Union (EU) in 2004 (A8 nationals) may need to register when they start work. (See Worker Registration Scheme).
Nationals of Bulgaria and Romania (A2) nationals may need to apply for permission before they start work. All other EEA nationals are free to take work in the UK without needing to apply for permission to work.
We can advise and assist with applications submitted by EEA nationals and their families to obtain confirmation of their status within the UK.
Under EC law, the non-EEA national family members, of an EEA national, derive a right of residence in the UK through the EEA national. This is provided that the EEA national has a right to reside in the UK themselves.
Family members of an EEA national include:
- Spouse/Civil Partner
- Children of the EEA national and his or her spouse who are under the age of 21 years or dependants, which include stepchildren or adopted children provided the adoption is recognised by the UK
- Dependants in the ascending line, parents, grandparents, of the EEA National
- In certain circumstances extended family members
