Responses to a consultation on draft guidance for local authorities to encourage landowners to provide land for affordable homes are required by 18 February 2010.
This will be of major interest to providers of social housing and in particular housing associations who acquire land in rural areas for affordable housing.
The consultation paper seeks views on ways to incentivise landowners to bring land forward. Suggestions being put forward are:
- giving the landlowner the right to retain a freehold interest in the land, i.e. grant a lease; and/or
- the landowner having the right to nominate family members provided the family member can demonstrate housing need and a local connection.
